The representation of Zeus Stratius, particularly well struck on this specimen, reproduces the famous statue of the temple of Nicomedia (the present Izmir in Turkey), the capital of the Kings of Bithynia. This masterpiece was made by the Bithynian sculptor Diodalsas, artist known by Arrian and Pliny. We also owe him the "Crouching Aphrodite” (Venus Accroupie), of which a copy from Roman times is now preserved in the Louvre. In order to fully hellenize their state, the kings of Bithynia built sumptuous cities, which then confronted each other in ridiculous and endless conflicts. The presence at the court of Bithynia of artists as reputable as Diodalsas reveals the splendor and opulence of the Hellenistic capitals of Asia Minor.

La représentation de Zeus Stratios, particulièrement réussie sur cet exemplaire, reproduit la célèbre statue du temple de Nicomédie (l’actuelle Izmir en Turquie), la capitale des rois de Bithynie. Ce chef-d’œuvre est réalisé par le sculpteur bithynien Diodalsès, artiste connu d’Arrien et Pline. Nous lui devons également la « Vénus accroupie », dont une copie d’époque romaine est aujourd’hui conservée au Louvre. Pour helléniser leur Etat en profondeur, les rois de Bithynie construisent de somptueuses cités qui s’affrontent ensuite dans des conflits ridicules et sans fin. La présence à la cour de Bithynie d’artistes aussi réputés que Diodalsès révèle la splendeur et le faste des capitales hellénistiques d’Asie Mineure.
