Cette splendide médaille, avec cette vue remarquable d’Hambourg, sur laquelle ne manquent pas même les animaux domestiques paissant à l’extérieur de ses murailles et les moulins à vent, conserve ainsi surtout la mémoire d’une maladresse monumentale de la diplomatie hanséatique.
Hambourg, ville appartenant à la Ligue hanséatique qui dominait le commerce maritime du Nord de l’Europe au cours du Moyen Age, fait jouer la diplomatie pour s’assurer des positions privilégiées en Méditerranée, au milieu du XVIIIe siècle. En 1748, elle signe un accord avec l’Espagne.
Trois ans plus tard, elle se flatte d’avoir assuré à sa flotte marchande les coudées franches également au sud de la Méditerranée, grâce au traité de paix signé avec le dey d’Alger, grâce aux bons offices du roi de France. Le dey est le suzerain des pirates barbaresques, qui entravent fortement le commerce en Méditerranée. La médaille de 1751 a pour but de représenter triomphalement ce succès diplomatique. Mais celui-ci se transforme vite en débâcle. Le roi d’Espagne, offensé qu’Hambourg s’accorde sous son nez avec son ennemi héréditaire, casse le traité de 1748. Il n’en faut pas moins pour apaiser la colère de Ferdinand VI qu’Hambourg en toute hâte demande au dey l’annulation de leur traité. L’année suivante, le roi d’Espagne, bon prince, veut bien oublier cet incident.
