Marie-Thérèse Charlotte of France, Duchess of Angoulême, was born on December 19, 1778 in Versailles. First child of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, she was the niece of Louis XVIII and played the role of surrogate queen. As Louis XVIII was the widower of Marie-Joséphine of Savoie since 1810, the Duchess’ role was to organize the court and to represent the king in the administrations. This gold example of the 5 Francs pattern is of rare beauty and was realized with extreme skill. The portrait gives us a splendid representation of a majestic king. Note that the portrait was engraved by Tiolier for the mint design contest of 1815 and was used on several different 5 Francs essais. This majestic bust portrays a King proclaimed by divine right, as the legitimate successor of Louis XVI. Even though the legend is written in French, it clearly stipulates that the monarchy was not subject to the constitution: Louis XVIII is described as “King of France” and not «of the French»! On April 25, 1817, the Duchess of Angoulême visited the Paris mint representing the King in his name. It was then customary for a coin or a medal to be struck to commemorate the visit of a sovereign or their representative. We can assume that less than ten gold examples exist. Moreover, in the special 1989 Gadoury book, we only have the following information: “few known / UNQUOTED”.
