Born on October 6, 1773 in Paris, Louis-Philippe bore the title of Duke of Valois until 1785, then Duke of Chartres from 1786 to 1793 and finally Duke of Orleans from 1793 to 1830. Belonging to the Orleans branch, he was therefore a cousin of the Bourbons, then on the throne. On the 27th, 28th and 29th of July, 1830, the so-called "Three Glorious Revolution" dethroned Charles X, the last king of the Bourbon dynasty. In his place, the Duke of Orleans is appointed Lieutenant-General of the kingdom and is supported by the leader of the Chamber of Deputies, Adolphe Thiers. Benefitting from a real national impetus, he is proclaimed “King of the French” under the name Louis-Philippe I, on August 9, 1830, becoming the first king of France subject to constitutional monarchy. This exceptional 5 Francs gold pattern was engraved by Tiolier. Although the design was not adopted for the first silver coin type, it remains a testimonial of historical importance. On the obverse, the title “King of the French” inaugurates a monarchy which no longer claims a divine legitimacy. On the other hand, the Constitutional Charter, a veritable crucible of the Orleans, is surmounted by a crown surrounded by a scepter and a hand of justice. Disposed on both sides, six blue-whitered flags embody the tricolor banner, which becomes again the official emblem of France.
