Catherine II, 1762-1796. 10 Roubles 1764 СПБ, Saint Petersburg. Obv. Б М ЕКАТЕРИНА ІІ ІМП ІСАМОД ВСЕРОС. Crowned bust right, engraver initials TI on shoulder. Rev. History would remember her as Catherine the Great. She had been in power for two years, when this imposing ten roubles coin type was struck. She was then thirty-five years old. Portrayed in her clothes covered with jewels, she definitely possesses power. Her enlightened despotism is moderated by her passion for the "republicans," Tacitus and Plutarch, but in reality she reads more the first than the second republican, in addition to the Prince of Machiavelli, in French, a language she perfectly dominates.
She passes from one lover to another, covers them with gifts, uses them ..., sometimes discarding them without compassion...Between the portraits of Peter the Great on the two roubles piece (above n° 267) and that of Catherine, forty-six years have passed: artistically, two different worlds are represented. This is due, to the talents of the renowned Geneva medalist Jacques Antoine Dassier, who had been present a few years earlier at the Saint Petersburg Mint...

Celle qui passera à l’histoire comme la Grande Catherine est au pouvoir depuis deux ans, lorsqu’elle fait frapper cette imposante pièce de dix Roubles. Elle a alors trente-cinq ans. A l’image de sa toilette couverte de bijoux, elle a assis définitivement son pouvoir. Son despotisme éclairé est tempéré par sa passion pour les « républicains » Tacite et Plutarque, qu’elle lit, plus le premier que le second en vérité, avec le Prince de Machiavel, en français, langue qu’elle domine parfaitement.

Elle passe d’un amant à l’autre, les couvre de cadeaux, s’en sert…, s’en débarrasse parfois sans état d’âme…Entre le portrait de Pierre le Grand sur la pièce de deux roubles (ci-dessus no 267) et celle de Catherine, quarante-six ans se sont écoulés: artistiquement, il s’agit de deux mondes différents. Le médailleur genevois Jacques Antoine Dassier est passé quelques années plus tôt à la Monnaie de Saint-Pétersbourg…
