Born on December 22, 1777 in St. Petersburg, Alexander 1st became the Emperor of Russia in 1801 following the assassination of his father Paul. He is best known for having courageously resisted the invasion of his country by the French armies in 1812 and for having contributed to the fall of Napoleon I. Later surrounded by an aura of glory and considering himself invested with a quasi-mystical mission, he was the instigator of the Holy Alliance whose aim was to preserve Europe from the troubles and propagation of the French Revolution. During a trip to southern Russia in autumn of 1825, he contracted typhus which killed him in the city of Taganrog. The sudden death of such a popular Tsar, left the entire empire doubtful to the point that many rumors soon circulated, the most widespread rumor being that the death of Alexander and his funeral were staged to allow the monarch, allegedly weary of power to renounce the throne, and to secretly retire to a monastery. We are therefore not surprised if this medal is rich in symbols. On the obverse: wearing the laurel wreath of the victor, the Tsar is surrounded by a snake biting its tail, symbol of eternity. The date of his death, November 19, 1825, which follows the Julian calendar and corresponds to December 1st of the Gregorian calendar. What can be said of this intriguing reverse? Let us simply note that Alexander was, from his earliest age, a member of the Freemasonry. As for the date 1812, it probably recalls the brilliant but cruel campaign of Russia which will lead the Tsar to Paris, and to his becoming the leading power in Europe. This impressive medal, by its size and quality, is certainly one of the highlights of this catalog. Indeed, these medals are rare and even more so in gold, utilizing a Masonic symbol to mark the death of an emperor
