Nicolas II was born May 18, 1868 in St. Petersburg. On November 1, 1894, he became the Tsar of all the Russians, King of Poland and Great Prince of Finland. On November 26, 1894 he married Alix of Hesse-Darmstadt, who became Alexandra Feodorovna. His reign was marked by the unfortunate war against Japan in 1905 and the First World War that would cause his downfall and death. In February 1917 the Tsar was overthrown and had to abdicate on March 2, 1917. He and his family were imprisoned in Tobolsk and then in Yekaterinburg, where they were executed on July 17, 1918. Only 300 examples of this 25 rubles or 2.5 imperials coin were minted, of which very few survive. This coin embodies the desire for an economic rapprochement between Russia and the European nations. This type corresponds to the 100 francs coin of the Latin Monetary Union concluded on December 23, 1865 between France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy, whose purpose was to facilitate their economic and financial exchanges. In fact, all the gold and silver coins of the member countries had the same weight, metal fineness and diameter. The present specimen is certainly one of the rarest types in Russian numismatics and its price reaches the highest levels during international auctions. This specimen is one which shows the portrait of the Tsar and is a moving testimonial of the Tsarist Russia, which would disappear forever a few years later.
