Due to its democratic principles, Switzerland doesn't award military orders. Only two have been created for all the cantons, one on august 10th, 1792, and this one on april 28th, 1815. The 1815 medal had been created to reward the Swiss soldiers in the army of Louis XVIII that refused to serve Napoleon during the Hundred Days. The first ceremony took place in Yverdon on october 12th, 1815, that is why it is often called the Yverdon Medal.
