Lysimachus is the last successeur of the faithful Generals of Alexander the Great who shared his vast empire until the Alexander’s death in 323, who took the title of basileus (“King”), in 304 nearly twenty years after the conquerors death. Then as King of Thrace, he immediately fought Demetrios of Macedonia and forged fluctuating alliances over time with his rivals the Lagids and Seleucids. His objective was to put under his authority the vast empire of Asia Minor, while protecting themselves in continental Greece from any whims of independence or of succession. In 302, he settled in western Phrygia where he was rapidly expanding his territory and then, in the aftermath of the Battle of Ipsos, he extends it to include all of Asia Minor up to the Taurus. Henceforth and following his marriage in 299 to the daughter of Ptolemy I, Arsinoe II whom he is madly in love with (he would have even promised monogamy!), he endeavors to restore and repair the damage caused to an Asia Minor devastated and bloodied, by more than twenty years of continuous conflict. Ephesus was rebuilt but moved because of its stagnation and then repopulated through the transfer of the population of nearby Colophon. The city would then expand to around 100,000 inhabitants, a colossal figure for the time. It became for a time the favored residence of the young Arsinoe who enhanced the work of her royal husband and made the Ionian city one of the most attractive ancient cities of its time, the rival of Alexandria! If Ephesus was the cultural capital and policy maker of Asia Minor under Lysimachus, Lampsacus, seems to be devoted to the monetary economy. In this effect, and for almost fifteen years, the city of Troas produced in numbers the most beautiful tetradrachms of Lysimachus. Their style immediately imposes a new elegance that forms the basis for the Hellenistic portrait. Some of these tetradrachms, among the more notable are considered masterpieces, including those belonging to the rare issue that contains an herm on the reverse.
