The Alexander gold staters in the name of Lysimachus are extremely rare. All mints combined, four were known to Mr. Price in 1991, at the time of the publication of his remarkable work. Yet, he did not recognize those struck in Colophon, of which there are two or three examples known which all are derived from the same pair of dies. Their rarity is explained by the very tight geographical location of their minting, as well as their dating and symbolic references. The striking of these staters is limited in time to two years, 299/8 to 297/6. The usual and personal types of Lysimachus then replaced them. Only five mints potentially produced and in very low quantity these gold staters: Lampsacus, Magnesia on the Meander, Sardis, Sestos and Colophon. These cities were the head of the bridge of the Thrace expansion in the western part of Asia Minor.

he message of Lysimachus is very clear; he presents himself as the true successor of Alexander in front the other successors. It is the guaranty of his inheritance and thus ensures the perpetuation in a region torn apart by the wars that followed the death of the Conqueror in 323.
