This superb sestertius of Caracalla is slightly anterior to the great monetary reform of 215. This reform sees the creation of a double denarius or antoninianus, weighing 1.5 denarius (the silver fineness remaining unchanged) but valued at 2 denarii. At the same time, the size of the aureus was reduced to 1/50th of a pound. De facto, large and beautiful bronze sestertii like this one were highly re-evaluated and therefore hoarded. We find them in monetary treasures until the middle of the third century and even afterwards.
