Aureus of Gordian III of the ”SALVS” type were referenced, nor known to this date. We may however date this coin by comparing it to the silver coins of the same type and struck at the same period. These date back to the seventh issue, which began in May 240. Gordian III was then just fifteen years old. He had been Emperor for two years and was to marry the following year, Tranquillina, the daughter of his principal counselor, Misitheus. The latter was a major politician in Rome (his career as a dignitary went back to Caracalla or Elagabalus), to the point of being considered the true master of the Empire, instead of the frail emperor.

he production of aurei under Gordian III is explained by the important tributes paid to maintain the frontiers, and for the preparations of the future campaign, which began as early as 242, against Shapur I, the King of the Persians. This campaign would be fatal to Gordian III, who would die of his wounds at the age of nineteen, following the crushing defeat of Misiche in 243/4. To liberate the survivors of this naval military disaster, Philip the Arab, his successor, must reluctantly pay the Great King a colossal ransom: 500,000 gold coins! Fortunately, Misitheus, the excellent administrator, had provisioned and anticipated the catastrophe. The coffers of the Imperial Treasury would easily assume this costly and painful expense.
