Born on September 16, 1859 in a village in the county of Xiangcheng, Yuan Shih-Kai began at a young age, a brilliant military career, then a political career, in Korea and then in China. In order to restore order and counter the warlike expansion of Japan, the King of Korea appointed him as subprefect with the mission of training 500 officers in the art of modern warfare. During the first Sino-Japanese war, Yuan Shih-Kai commanded the Chinese forces stationed in Korea. In 1902, he was appointed Viceroy of Zhili and notably repressed the Boxer Rebellion. Accused of participating in a conspiracy against the emperor of China, he narrowly avoided execution and is forced to retire in 1909. The Wuchang Uprising of October 11, 1911, obliges the Chinese government to recall him and even to appoint him Prime Minister and then President. Yuan Shih-Kai even obtains the abdication of the child Emperor Puyi, and on December 12, 1915, proclaims himself emperor for life of the Chinese Empire, under the name Hongxian. But three months later he is forced to abdicate under the pressure of the revolutionaries and the army. On June 4, 1916, he succumbs to a cerebral hemorrhage. The bust of Yuan Shih-Kai on the present pattern dollar was directly inspired from an official photograph presenting him as President of the Republic of China.
