This rare aureus was struck in Asia Minor, the day after the battle of Philippi. Bolstered by his victory, and by the newly attained peace, Mark Antony decides to head towards the East in order to dominate the Parthians, and to become at the same time, Master of the Gauls and of the East. Once arrived at Tarsus, in Cilicia, he meets Cleopatra VII, whom he distrusts, but in absence of her support, he seeks her neutrality. These wishes will be realized and even surpassed.
