Born on 29 September 1820 at the Tuileries Palace, Henri d’Artois was the last legitimate descendant of Louis XV. He represented the eldest branch of the royal family, the Bourbons, on the throne since 1589. In July 1830, the Revolution called the «Three Glorious» dethroned Charles X, who then gave the order to Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orleans, Lieutenant-General of the Kingdom, to declare the accession of Henry d’Artois to the throne. But Louis-Philippe ignored this order and had himself proclaimed “King of the French” by the Chamber of Deputies on August 9, 1830. This younger royal branch, called the Orleans, then acceded to the throne for 18 years... On August 16, 1830, the royal family of the Bourbons went to exile in England. In April 1832, the Duchess of Berry, mother of Henri d’Artois, landed in France in order to provoke an uprising and restore the throne to her son. This tentative failed and the Duchess was arrested. The obverse shows a young Henry aged 12, pretender to the throne, proclaiming himself “King of France”, according to the titles of the Bourbons. On the reverse, the three lilies on the field azure of the royal flag symbolizes the elder branch of the dynasty, even though the king in place, Louis-Philippe, had accepted the tricolor flag. Lastly, let us note that the 2 fleurs-de-lis accosting the date, discreetly replace the mintmarks: an embarrassing situation for a future king of France to issue his first coinage abroad!
