Ex. CNG auction Triton V, 15-16 january 2002, lot 1998.

In march 161, Antoninus died. His last wish was that the Senate grant his adoptive brother Lucius Verus the title of Augustus along with Marcus Aurelius.

It was the first time in Roman history that the Empire is given to two coequal rulers. In 162, The Parthians attacked the eastern provinces and Lucius traveled with his legions to repulse the invasion. He took back Armenia and was called "Armeniacus". The Roman legions attacked the Parthians capital of Ctesiphon and it was a great victory with Lucius winning the title of "Parthicus Maximus". In 166, he came back in Rome as victor.
